What Adoption Really Means
You Are Not "Giving Up" Your Baby When You Choose Adoption
From talk shows to books and even casual conversation amongst friends, the term "give up" has unfortunately become synonymous with adoption. Birth mothers are often referred to as women who chose to "give up" their babies for adoption. However, if American society stopped to think about what birth mothers and adoption agencies were really saying, they would realize that this stigma couldn't be further from the truth.
The reality is that birth mothers are not "giving up" anything when they choose adoption. When faced with an unplanned pregnancy, they wade through a sea of emotion, ultimately finding their inner strength and courage to pursue adoption as their answer.
In choosing adoption, birth mothers do not "give up" their baby. Instead, they choose a life for their child - a life complete with all of the hugs, laughter and lullabies they desire for them. In choosing adoption, birth mothers are putting the needs of the baby first and in doing so making a life-long parenting decision for their child.
Today's birth mothers are able to see firsthand how their baby grows up though pictures, letters and sometimes even visits and phone calls. Birth mothers not only choose adoption, but they choose the life they imagine for their baby. From family pets to holiday traditions, a birth mother chooses a family that can provide all of the hopes and dreams she has for her child's future.
When faced with great adversity, birth mothers show great courage and understanding. Out of nothing more than pure love, birth mothers who choose adoption give not only their baby a life full of care, but parents a baby to cherish. And just as they cherish their new baby, adoptive parents will also cherish the birth mother for the brave choice she has made - the choice not to "give up" on her child.
